Introducing Usearch: A Multi-Purpose Marketplace App Connecting Users with Vetted Service Providers
Finding reliable service providers for on-demand services can be challenging, especially in Nigerian cities where trust and quality can be issues. Usearch, a new start-up based in Kano, Nigeria, aims to address these challenges by connecting users with vetted service providers through their mobile app.
Founded by a team of six, including a serial entrepreneur, a professional software engineer, a business manager, a financial expert, and a legal expert. The Usearch story began when the founders experienced the frustrations of unreliable service providers. One of the founders needed a plumber but was let down by a recommended plumber who failed to show up. This experience, along with the growing need for on-demand services in Nigeria, led the founders to pivot from a business listing mobile app to on-demand services in early 2022. The app provides users with access to a range of service providers, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and more.
While Usearch currently operates primarily in Nigeria, the company has plans for expansion to other geographic locations and service categories. The app’s user-friendly interface and powerful features, including a booking schedule, booking progress tracking, rating and review system, push notifications, multiple payment options, and a loyalty program, make it a compelling option for those in need of reliable service providers.
Unlike many of its competitors, Usearch puts service providers through a strict screening process, including background checks, credential verification, and up to four weeks of one-on-one re-skills training. In addition, Usearch enables users to rate and leave reviews for service providers, helping the company maintain its high standard of service.
However, Usearch does face a number of challenges, including maintaining high service quality standards, scaling effectively to meet increasing demand, acquiring new customers, staying up-to-date with regulatory requirements, and competing against larger tech companies with greater resources. To address these challenges, Usearch plans to focus on providing a smooth user experience, developing effective marketing and customer acquisition strategies, implementing scalable and efficient business models, and leveraging technology to streamline operations and provide more personalized services.
Despite being a new player, Usearch can learn a lot from other companies in the global market, such as TaskRabbit, and avoid their early mistakes, while also benefiting from the founders’ local knowledge. TaskRabbit became a successful company with over 1.5 million users and 140,000 ‘taskers’ in a similar marketplace. The question is, can Usearch become the top provider in Nigeria?
